What is Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis?

Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a disease of the bile ducts. These ducts transport bile to the intestines to aid in food digestion. In primary sclerosing cholangitis, the body attacks the bile ducts, causing them to be constantly inflamed. Over time, the inflamed bile ducts harden and develop scar tissue which disrupts bile flow, causing liver damage and eventually liver failure. PSC is a progressive disease without a known cause. The only known cure for PSC is a liver transplant, but transplant is typically reserved for individuals with severe liver damage. Up to 30 percent of people diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis will eventually develop cancer in their bile ducts.
